A Copalera is a traditional vessel used for burning Copal, an aromatic resin from different trees in Central America and Mexico, such as white copal or gold copal. This ceramic vessel is used to hold and burn copal during ceremonies, rituals, and spiritual practices.

Historically, Copal has been fundamental in various pre-Columbian Mesoamerican cultures, such as the Aztec and Maya, where it was used in religious ceremonies and as an offering to the gods. It was believed that copal smoke purified the environment, drove away negative energies, and facilitated communication with the divine.

Aroma: sweet, resinous, and slightly citrusy; similar to incense. Copal is considered to have aromatic properties that promote relaxation, energetic cleansing, and spiritual connection.

Usage ideas:

  1. Light the charcoal: Use a lighter, match, or candle to light the charcoal in the copalera. Hold it with tongs or a heat-resistant stand to avoid burns.
  2. Wait for the charcoal to heat up: Let the charcoal heat for a few minutes until it turns a bright red or gray on the surface. This indicates that it is ready to burn the Copal.
  3. Place the Copal on the charcoal: Once the charcoal is incandescent, place the Copal pieces on top of the hot charcoal in the copalera. The heat from the charcoal will melt the Copal resin, releasing its aroma and producing aromatic smoke.
  4. Distribute the smoke: With the Copal on the charcoal, gently move the copalera around the space you wish to purify or perfume to distribute the smoke.
  5. Ventilation: After use, be sure to ventilate the area well and extinguish the charcoal if you no longer need it. You can let it burn out completely or extinguish it with water if necessary.
